BEGINNERS DAY

For the second year running John Grubb organised our Beginners Day which was held on Sunday 22nd March at Wolvey Village Hall in conjunction with the Nest Feather Show, although he nearly didn’t make it as he was feeling none too well on the Saturday and for some reason got it into his head on the Sunday that our new venue was at Loddington!  Never mind John you made it in the end.

Speaking to him afterwards he said that he thought the new venue was excellent and that he much preferred talking with his audience in the main Hall where the Show was taking place, rather than being in the kitchen where it was held at Woodway Park School.

Approximately 10 people of mixed experience attended this morning session and John tried to keep things as simple as possible although he stressed that it is always difficult to judge at what level to pitch any talk.

John Grubb speaking to his audience

This year in his packages he gave away quite a few of the books on budgerigars which were written and donated by Roy Stringer and copies of Cage & Aviary Birds.  Alan Minchin had also given him quite a few books for the Day.  He also passed on basic tips such as using a black marker pens for touching up show cages and white marker pens for making running repairs to cage fronts.  To get around the problem of failing adhesive on cage labels he advised using a prit stick as there is nothing more frustrating and time consuming than arriving at a show with half your labels missing.  John also gave away nest box cards and a few other goodies.  He confessed though that he didn’t give away as many items this year.

Many topics were covered during the morning from colour expectations to dealing with basic bird room tasks like recycling seed by using a sieve.

As always John is always prepared to help should anyone need further advice or         information and can be contacted by telephoning 01215 592059.

Also if you attended the Beginners Day either this year or last year and feel there are things that you would like to see covered which weren’t, why not contact John or alternatively write to our General Secretary Bruce Greenway 98 Loudon Avenue, Coventry CV6 1JP.
